Health Exchange for North Dakota

Starting on October 1, 2013, North Dakota residents have been using a federally run health exchange program to research and select a health insurance company and plan. For the nearly 11 percent of the population that is without health insurance, they are also able to find out if they qualify for subsidies to help defray the monthly premiums associated with purchasing a health insurance plan.

North Dakota is one of the nearly half of the states in the United States that has opted for the federal government to run their health insurance marketplace. The North Dakota House of Representatives voted against a state run health exchange in 2011 and then again in 2012.

Options for North Dakota Residents

Currently, there are three different health insurance companies participating in the marketplace in North Dakota. These carriers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, Medica and Sanford. There three different health insurance companies will offer a combined 24 different plans for residents of North Daokta to choose from. However, prices are slightly higher than the national average.

As a courtesy, these three health insurance companies will be conducting workshops and community outreach programs to help North Dakota residents make informed decisions regarding which health insurance plan option will be best for them. North Dakota also has health insurance navigators to educate the public regarding health insurance policies and subsidies, which can help lower the cost of health insurance policies for those who qualify.

North Dakota residents should keep in mind that health insurance costs cannot be affected by age, sex and pre-existing medical conditions. In North Dakota, there is a health insurance plan available for everyone.
